Founders Vic Bryant and Russ Doherty, both Chartered Accountants, were early entries into the profession of personal financial planning. Beginning almost 30 years ago, both recognized a need for a personal advisory service that co-ordinated all aspects of personal finance and that was free from sales pressure.

Taxes, rules, financial products and technology have all changed over the years. Our underlying philosophy has not. Coordinate all aspects of personal finance.

Our team has evolved into a co-ordinated group of senior and junior advisors, planning and administrative support staff and periodic contractual tax experts. All of our advisors are recognized and qualified financial planning professionals.

Every one of us is committed to protecting and enhancing your Net Worth. We need to know what is important to you and will focus accordingly. We expect to deliver clarity and confidence. We will investigate and evaluate the financial marketplace on your behalf and deliver both time and cost savings.

We bring ready access to an extensive network of other professionals when needed, covering investment, income tax, law, insurance, actuarial and other complimentary disciplines.

To begin, we prefer an informal, no-cost introductory meeting face to face to answer questions, and if agreeable to both sides, map out how we can best be of service.

Thank you for your interest in our Firm!

Russ Doherty, CA, CFP, R.F.P.

I am a Saskatchewan native and have spent my entire career in the Calgary business community. I have a passion for helping put complex financial issues into everyday language and a drive toward helping families enjoy their wealth in the most positive way. It works for me too!

The basic philosophy underpinning my advisory style is to treat my clients the same way I would like to be treated, which is with empathy, simplicity, and respect.

Prior to co-founding Doherty & Bryant, I articled with Price Waterhouse, operated in both private and public businesses, served as President & Chairman (Alberta) and Board member (Canada) of the Association of Financial Planners.  For almost 30 years, my focus has been 100% on independent personal financial advice.

I am married to the lovely and dynamic Reta, and together we enjoy 4 young-adult children and a very active outdoor lifestyle.  We love to entertain and travel. I also have a passion for all things mechanical including cars, trucks, motorcycles, buses, boats and airplanes.

Vic Bryant, CPA, CA, RFP, CFP

Vic BryantMy experience in the financial planning industry extends over 30 years. Prior to co-founding Doherty & Bryant, I was President of a Calgary-based financial planning firm and prior to that, a Director and Regional Vice President and General Manager (Calgary) for TE Wealth.

My expertise, as a comprehensive advisor, covers all aspects of wealth management for high net worth individuals and their families, including tax, investment, estate and retirement planning.  I enjoy collaborating with other professionals to bring innovative solutions to client situations.

I have been active on the Board of Directors of the Estate Planning Council of Calgary (past President 2014-2015) and hold current memberships in the Financial Planners Standards Council, the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners, the Canadian and Alberta Institutes of Chartered Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants – Personal Financial Planning Division.

I volunteer my support as a member of the Foothills Hospital Development Council and Alumni of the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede Parade Committee.

I’ve been married to Sheila for 37 years and together we have four adult children.  I’ve had a keen interest in marathon running, having completed Marathons in Honolulu, Victoria, Las Vegas, and New York City and have been a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Calgary in their marathon running program.

Aaron Hector, B.Comm., CFP

Aaron Hector

I have a rare mix of youth and experience, having started my career in comprehensive wealth management earlier than most in the industry. The experience has come from a side-by-side mentorship with Russ Doherty and Vic Bryant for most of the last decade. They each bring something different to the table as advisors so being exposed to both of them, and their clients have been invaluable. My clients take comfort in knowing that they have found an advisor who will be around to serve them throughout their career and retirement.

I hold a Bachelors of Commerce Degree (Finance) from the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary, as well as a Certified Financial Planning (CFP) designation with the Financial Planning Standards Council.  Attaining my Registered Financial Planner (R.F.P.) designation is on the horizon for 2016 and beyond that my Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) designation in 2017.

As a dual citizen, I am continually expanding my knowledge in cross-border financial planning (Canada-USA). I am well versed in planning for Canadian snowbirds that are spending time in the US and also planning for US citizens who are living in Canada.

I am on the Strategy Review Team for T.E. Wealth and hold memberships in the Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC), the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners (IAFP), and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP Canada).

On a personal note, my lovely wife Miranda and I are the proud parents of 2-year-old twin girls. When I’m not running after my daughters, I play for and manage a Calgary men’s soccer team.

Jen Schmid, MPAcc, CA

Jen SchmidI was born and raised on a farm just outside of Calgary, where my parents still earn their living today.  Numbers came easily to me, so I pursued an early career in accounting.

After earning a Master’s degree in Accounting from the University of Saskatchewan, I articled with Deloitte & Touche to gain my Chartered Accountant (CA) designation, but I discovered my true passion for personal financial planning in 2014 when I joined Doherty & Bryant.

I am currently pursuing my Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Registered Financial Planner (R.F.P) designations within the next year and am a member of the Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC), the Canadian and Alberta Institutes of Chartered Accountants and an associate member of the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners.

I fill my spare time with my other passion – basketball – along with many other activities including slo-pitch, snowboarding, snowshoeing, hiking and backpacking.  The people that know me best know that the last place they will find me is at my house.
